Why bother?
Despite the excitement of winding up, spending your last couple of weeks at work post-resignation can be challenging. It can also be straight-forward and pleasant if you choose to make it so.
Being slack and neglecting your work will only bring you down from the positive position you have worked yourself up to.
Do the best you can to effect a smooth transition and you will feel more positive about yourself and the experience. Getting stuck into the day will make the time pass easily and you will leave on a positive note and maybe even feel good that you have.
How to handover
If you are fortunate enough to be on top of things, great!
If you have matters unfinished, you will need to give these to either your replacement (if they are in place), a colleague or your boss.
Give them whatever information and assistance they need so that they have what they will need to perform the role.
If you are leaving on bad terms, it will likely have little to do with the person coming into your role so remember what goes around, comes around.
Written notes or checklists are always appreciated. Starting something new is confusing and notes clarify things can be referred to later. It also demonstrates a professional approach.
Prepare simple instructions about who to speak to on key subjects which will be useful for the newbie.
If you are responsible for managing other people, ensure their personnel files are up to date with relevant details (copies of performance reviews, agreements for study leave etc). Don’t compromise their future by being lazy or disinterested.
Play nice around your colleagues and don’t be too smug about your move. Victory laps are seldom appreciated!
Your boss may make use of your time before you leave to understand better where you are at with your work. They will need to keep things moving after you leave, so help out where you can.
You will however, know if you are being taken advantage of and there is a very big difference between being professional and being a schmuck. Judge the situation and handle it accordingly.
